Why Superfood Lattes Are The Perfect Coffee Alternative

For me, coffee has always made me feel SO sick, and to be honest, it has made me feel left out! In high school, I used to go to Starbucks and get a hot chocolate just to carry the cup around and feel like I, like everyone else, was important and had important things to do and needed my “coffee” HA!

BUT if you are a coffee drinker I’m not suggesting you throw coffee out of the picture, sometimes you just need a little more than caffeine to wake up and start your day on the right foot. There are so many superfoods with different natural health benefits that can be used to create a “latte”. You can really customize and create something different every morning based on how you feel.

It also doesn’t hurt that they’re really colorful and pretty, so I won’t tell if you “just do it for the IG” –  haha. Let’s get into some of the benefits and nutrients of these warm morning pick-me-ups!

Anti-Aging

Antioxidants are phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals that protect the body from free radicals like environmental pollutants and inflammation that speed up the signs of aging. We want to protect our skin and antioxidants do that from the inside out. Antioxidants help your skin and DNA repair itself. Turmeric, matcha, pomegranates, and acai are all nutrients that are VERY high in antioxidants. Pomegranates and beets are particularly high in vitamin C which helps cell repair for our skin.

Bloat No More

Digestion has been a big topic lately and for good reason, because 1) No one likes to feel bloated and 2) Gut health controls so much of the body from weight management to building good bacteria that fight toxins.

Turmeric is a known anti-inflammatory and has been used in Indian ayurvedic medicinal practice for centuries for gastroinestinal issues. Here is also a study that show that turmeric might help sooth bowels for those with IBS. Pomegranate powder is also high in B-complex vitamins that help the body convert foods into energy. Spirulina has also been proven to help the microflora balance in our gut by stopping candidiasis, a harmful leader in the cause of autoimmune diseases.

Immunity Boost

Ingredients high in anti-inflammatories and antioxidants, like turmeric, boost the immune system and fight pathogens or infections. As mentioned before beets and pomegranate are FULL of Vitamin C, an incredible immune booster. Matcha has a high mixture of flavonoids and antioxidants which can kill of bacteria and bad breath. Matcha and spirulina are also rich in chlorphyll properties that naturally detoxify toxins and metals in the body.

Clear Focus & Concentration

Naturally occurring sources of energy can often offer a clear mental focus and memory aid that doesn’t have a “crash”. Matcha in particular does have caffeine usually 80mg-120mg which is equal to about one cup of coffee. BUT it has a naturally high occurring amount of l-theanine which is a compound that is said to create “relaxation without sedation” and amino acids which in conjunction basically mean no caffeine jitters.

Since Spirulina is so good at ridding the nervous system of heavy metal or environmental toxins it can allow for brain clarity as well. These two have made a serious NOTICEABLE difference in my mental focus. It’s not a jolt of energy and there is no 3pm crash, it’s simply that I feel an all-day clear consistent energy. I don’t know how to entirely describe my personal experience but this has been the most amazing benefit for me.

Spike that Metabolism

Weight loss in a latte? Say no more haha! While you probably won’t be losing 15-20lbs from these superfoods, they have been researched to show effects on increasing metabolism rates. We’ve all heard that green tea supports weight loss, but did you know matcha is simply the green tea leaves finely ground so instead of drinking water steeped in the tea leaves you are consuming the leaves themselves. The antioxidant EGCG is linked to weight loss studies and match has 3x higher EGCG concentration that green tea. A 2011 issue of the European Journal of Nutrition reviewed that the antioxidant in turmeric “suppresses inflammatory messaging in fat cells which can help curb insulin resistance and other metabolic conditions”, read more information about the study here.

What You Need + Additional Ingredients

Feel free to make these recipes your own, I think there is really no wrong way to make a superfood latte so have fun with it! For example, sometime I put Bulletproof’s MCT oil in my matcha to not only make it a little thicker, but the MCT oil gives me enough healthy fat to stay full until lunch and helps with my mental focus.

I LOVE throwing a spoonful of my Moon Juice Blue Adaptogen Protein (full of blue spirulina) in my matcha for some added protein and nutrients.

Below are some items for your “Superfood Latte Starter Kit”. Enjoy!
