The Best Natural Sunscreens and DIY Sunscreen

Hello everyone!

We are on a roll right after the my last post about natural laundry detergent to find only the best ingredients for our bodies. But today, let’s talk about something that we have all been told we should wear daily and that we all assume is safe… SUNSCREEN. Being that my skin is so fair naturally and I wasn’t careful with the sun when I was young, sunspots are a big problem for me.

It’s true sunscreen helps our skin from the harmful UVB rays (the ones that cause your skin to burn), sunspots, discoloration, and aging of the skin. But it’s also true that the majority of sunscreens on the market are full of other harmful ingredients and chemical sunscreen doesn’t even protect you against UVA rays that penetrate even deeper and can cause great damage to your skin.

For the amount of time and products we invest into keep our skin looking healthy, I decided it was time to find a sunscreen with the right ingredients that I don’t hate putting on. So, read this before you buy your next Banana Boat Sunscreen! 🙂

Natural/Mineral Based vs. Conventional Sunscreen

What’s the difference? CHEMICALS. Our skin absorbs so much of what we put on it, especially if we are sweating (aka those sunny days you typically use sunscreen), and some of the chemicals most common in conventional sunscreen are known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Not what we ever want to put in or our kid’s sunscreen.

Additionally, natural/mineral sunscreens, as I mentioned above, reflect both UVA and UVB rays versus conventional sunscreen that disperse rays through the body.

I made a video (You can see it below) that talks more about just what ingredients to avoid and tips that have made a huge difference for me. There’s also a DIY recipe to make your own natural sunscreen. Yes, it was way simpler than I anticipated! (haha)

Call me Lore Ingredients to avoid on sunscreen

My DIY Sunscreen

In order to make your own sunscreen, you’ll need the following ingredients:

That’s IT. I mix a little of each until it creates a paste that I rub on my skin.

This is a secret I learned from beauty guru May Lindstrom herself. The blue cocoon is an amazing product that she shared in my beauty secrets interview with her, and it’s a powerful hydrator and anti-inflammatory balm. I love it! I use it every day.

Zinc oxide is the best UVB and UVA protector and non-nano which means the particles are too big to penetrate the skin.

My Favorite Natural Sunscreens

If you’re looking to purchase a natural sunscreen, the following are ones I recommend:

  1. Suntegrity – Tinted Sunscreen
  2. Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen and Primer
  3. Krypris Pot of Shade – Heliotropic
